Bring Your Own Capacity: Clean Power, Over the Wires

How Firma Power’s Portfolio Designer builds a quiet, load-enabling supply strategy for large loads

01The premise

Large loads now have to bring their own capacity

Speed to power

Data centers used to be tens of megawatts. A developer picked a site, called the utility, and the utility planned the generation and wires to serve it. Today a single campus can ask for hundreds or thousands of megawatts, on a timeline shorter than it takes to build the generation and transmission to serve it. Utilities rarely say no. They say “get in line,” which costs the developer the same thing.

So power strategy can no longer follow site selection. It has to drive it. Every large load needs a portfolio that passes four coupled tests:

  1. Deliverable. The transmission system can carry the generated power to the load through normal conditions and credible outages without prohibitive upgrades.
  2. Accredited. The portfolio contributes enough Resource Adequacy capacity in every season and at every stage of the load ramp.
  3. Compliant. The portfolio meets each market’s and utility’s accreditation, deliverability and bring-your-own-capacity rules, with each resource online in step with the load ramp.
  4. Economic. The all-in cost of generation, transmission upgrades, and commercial structures supports the customer’s business case.

FirmaOS addresses all four: Digital Prospector finds POIs with strong transmission capacity and power-supply opportunities, and Portfolio Designer designs the supply portfolio for a chosen site. Firma Power assembles portfolios of queued wind, solar, and storage, then adds regionally appropriate flexibility, supplemental storage, distributed energy resources, or emerging technologies and delivers the result to the utility over the existing grid. The portfolio is built to minimize the cost and timeline to deliver load-enabling power.

Over-the-wire is good for communities

A data center that needs power before grid supply is ready has one alternative: build its own. On-site gas turbines or engines solve the supply problem and create new ones: local pollution, noise, water use and traffic. They turn a data center into a power plant in the eyes of the county, the air regulator, and their neighbors.

Recent permitting battles have made one thing clear: If there is anything residents like less than a data center in their back yard, it is a data center with dozens of jet engines running in their back yard around the clock.

Communities raise the same concerns in every state: noise, air emissions, water, and fuel storage tanks. On-site fossil generation significantly contributes to all of these, and community members will understandably object at local hearings.

Under a Portfolio Capacity Agreement, Firma Power assembles and delivers portfolios of clean, quiet power over the wires under utility bring-your-own-capacity (BYOC) rules—a solution to each of these concerns:

  • Nothing burns at the site. The campus is a building with a substation, not a power plant. No combustion air permit, no fuel pipeline or storage, no plume, no turbine noise.
  • Generation is built where it belongs. Wind, solar, and storage go on their own permitted sites, in counties that want the tax base and lease payments, and connect through the existing transmission system. They can be sited where their capacity factor and economics compete, driving down supply costs.
  • The load pays for its own capacity. The customer brings the deliverable accredited capacity the utility needs to serve it, so existing ratepayers are not funding new generation on the data center’s behalf.
  • The utility stays the utility. BYOC works inside the utility’s service, tariff, and resource-adequacy rules. The commission and the local government are approving something familiar: a large retail customer, served over the wire.
02Portfolio Designer

The Portfolio

Portfolio Designer evaluates deliverability, accreditation, economics, and timing together because a resource that strengthens one test can change the cost, schedule, or risk profile of the others.

A portfolio is more than the sum of its parts. Different technologies have different seasonal capacity-accreditation trends, so a diverse portfolio can balance accredited capacity across the year. Choices that improve one axis can still change the others. Portfolio Designer uses state-of-the-art grid modeling and economic optimization to find the combination that minimizes all-in cost and exposure to study, commercial, and schedule risk across all four tests.

Portfolio Designer combines quantitative optimization with Firma Power’s proprietary developer data and relationships. It evaluates expected COD, accredited capacity over time, all-in cost, deliverability and interconnection pathways, and available contract structures against the load ramp. Firma Supply and Commercial teams continuously validate project availability, pricing, timing, contract options, and counterparty readiness; those findings feed back into the model as the portfolio evolves.

03From model to transaction

FirmaOS analysis is the beginning of diligence and commercial execution, not the end

Portfolio Designer narrows a wide pool of candidate projects into a concrete strategy ready for action. Firma Supply and Commercial teams then pursue those portfolios, engaging counterparties and conducting the transmission, accreditation, project-development, contract, credit, and commercial diligence required to make them executable.

Execution includes confirming resource availability and schedules, negotiating commercial structures, advancing the applicable market and utility pathways, and resolving issues uncovered in diligence. The final product is not a chart. It is an approvable, executable path to power.

FirmaOS enables Firma Power to deliver an easy-button solution to bring-your-own-capacity, abstracting away the underlying complexity of both analysis and commercial execution.
